The Environment Team for the Fenty e-Transition submitted its priority recommendations to the Transition staff today. We'll be briefing staff and then sharing our results with the public this Thursday, 12/21 from 10-11:30am in a webinar.

Each of the Environment Team's five groups identified a page of highest priority issues. Overall, we looked at the need to create an infrastucture that can support a world class environmental program, and link our natural areas to the fabric of our communities; identified strategies to boost existing programs to optimize performance; underscored the need for more effective public involvement in making environmental programs work on the community level; and focused on taking advantage of savings that can result from smart investments in how we fuel our economy. The groups' top three priorities are each listed below, and the full set of priority recommendations are attached as a file at the end of this posting. Your comments are welcome.
The Energy Group’s 3 highest priorities are:
1. Slash Energy Waste in Schools and Large Government Facilities
2. Use the Building Code to Ensure Energy Efficiency
3. Establish Progressive Financing Vehicles to Promote Energy Investment
The Parks and Recreation Group’s 3 highest priorities are:
1. Restore Integrated Park Maintenance, Ecological Health, And Urban Tree Canopy
2. Enrich Youth Development and Prevent Gang Violence Through City-Wide Out-Of-School-Time Programming of Our Parks, Waterways, and Recreation Centers
3. Ensure That Every School Uses Our Parks
The DDoE & Environmental Services Group’s 3 highest priorities are:
1. Lead
2 Recycling
3. DDOE Enforcement Division & Environmental Crimes Unit
The Water Group’s 3 highest priorities are:
1. Mayoral Vision and Leadership for Restoration of the Anacostia
2. Green Roofs
3. Storm Water Administrator
The Transportation Group’s 3 highest priorities are:
1. Require New Development and Large Employers (Over 50 Employees) to Create and Submit Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) Plans to DDOT
2. The Office of the Mayor Should Coordinate Appropriate City Agencies to Support the Development of a State-Of-The-Art Urban-Infill Neighborhood
3. Increase Travel Options to Provide Reliable Transportation and Reduce Traffic Congestion
The Environment Team will follow the priority recommendations with a full set of recommendations and supporting narrative at the end of December.
